A Derbyshire police officer, and a PCSO from Leicestershire, have received a bravery award for their courageous actions in preventing a man, who had doused himself in petrol, from setting himself on fire.
PC Matt Jones (pictured right), who was also a PCSO at Leicestershire Police at the time of the incident, was presented with the accolade alongside his former colleague Philip Grimwood at the BBC Make a Difference Awards in Leicester earlier this month.
The now PC Jones, and PCSO Grimwood, had themselves become covered in petrol during the incident. They managed to remove a lighter from the man, but he produced a second lighter from his pocket.
He had been stood very close to a busy restaurant and could potentially have killed or injured a lot of people including himself and Matt and Philip if they had not taken decisive action to stop him.
PC Jones said: “At the time our focus was on protecting the man and the people in the restaurant, it was only afterwards it hit us how dangerous the situation was.
“It is nice to be recognised and we are very grateful that someone has realised it was a good job.”
Chief Constable Rachel Swann said: “It’s fantastic to see the bravery that Matt showed during this incident has been recognised in the BBC Radio Leicester Make A Difference Awards.
“We’re really proud of Matt and the work that our officers do to protect our communities and keep them safe from harm.”
Since completing his initial training to become a Police Constable in Derbyshire, Matt now works on the response teams covering the South Derbyshire area.
Inspector Mike Sisman, who is in charge of policing in the South Derbyshire area said: “It’s wonderful to see Matt’s courageous actions during his time as a PCSO in Leicestershire being recognised in this way.
“We have some fantastic officers and staff members who demonstrate their commitment to keeping our communities safe, many of whom carry out acts of bravery every day and it’s great to be able to welcome Matt to our team in the South Derbyshire area.”
The BBC Radio Leicester Make A Difference Awards ceremony was held on Sunday 3 September at The Athena, and featured eight different categories with the aim of recognising people in the community who go above and beyond.
