We were called to reports of a man in Abbey Street, Derby, who had suffered serious injuries after being assaulted at 7.20pm on Wednesday 2 October.
The man, who is in his 20s, was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
A man, also in his 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and he remains in police custody.
It is understood that the two men are known to one another and there is no wider risk to the public.
Abbey Street remains closed from the junction with Burton Road to Boyer Street.
DCI Matt Croome, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a serious assault of a young man in the street. We urgently need to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and who has not already spoken to officers.
“We have a man in our custody and a team of detectives are currently working through a number of lines of enquiry following this incident.
“I do understand that this incident will have had a significant impact on the local community, and we are working with our local policing teams and extra patrols are being undertaken in the area.
“If you have any concerns or information then you can speak to officers on patrol – or alternatively you can contact us using any of the below methods.”
