This past year has been a year like no other. But over the past few months, as we see the Covid-19 vaccine roll-out gathering momentum, there is finally a feeling of optimism in the air about 2021.
Alongside the NHS, it's taken a huge range of public service workers and key workers to keep the country going during Covid-19 and three lockdowns.
Recognition has been especially meaningful during the pandemic, and we saw that during the first lockdown as people around the country stood at their doorsteps and clapped each week for key workers.
We receive messages of appreciation from people across Derbyshire (and beyond) who have come into contact with our officers and staff, from those who were supported through a difficult time, a simple thank you from a motorist stuck in snow, our call handlers being kind, effective, empathetic and ultimately helpful, and officers helping someone who had fallen in the street...
"Recently, my aunt had a fall requiring police and ambulance services, and she also had a kitchen fire which the officer cleaned up today after her shift. My aunt has no family locally and clearly needs help. I am currently shielding so am unable to visit. The officer has also ensured that other officers have visited my aunt every few days to check on her welfare, and she has been keeping me updated after her visits, which I find invaluable in the current situation. I would like to thank her again for her kindness."
Pandemic or no pandemic, we're here for you, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year. Looking after others, protecting the vulnerable and serving our communities is what we do. Every single day, individuals and teams working for Derbyshire Constabulary go to extraordinary lengths to help create a safer Derbyshire. Not all of them get the attention they deserve.
Now you can help us say a big thank you by nominating our staff who have played their own, vital, part over the last year. We're looking for people who are doing the right thing, making a difference and shaping the future.
The award is open to any police officer serving within Derbyshire Constabulary. It is not restricted to officers who have a specific community role. The diversity of our work means that service to the community can encompass a wide range of activities.
The award for Police Community Support Officer of the Year recognises outstanding contribution within the community in addressing local concerns, fear of crime and on improving reassurance.
This award for the best Safer Neighbourhood team is aimed at highlighting the fantastic work done by officers, staff and volunteers, working with partner organisations in the community.
The deadline for nominations for 2021 has now passed.
