I have worked for Derbyshire Constabulary for almost 8 years, with 5 of those being a PCSO on Derby East, and as a tutor on Derby North, my current role and posting is as a PCSO Supervisor for Derby West, so I have had some quite varied beat areas over the years, all with their own challenges and rewards.

As a PCSO Supervisor one of my main duties is to work with partner agencies, organisations, charities to look at visible and sustainable resolutions to issues that affect residents, neighbourhoods or entire wards. As an officer on SNT we are all afforded a bit more time to focus on long term solutions to problems, rather than responding to emergency calls, it means we can embed ourselves in every aspect of a community; from educational inputs to schools, visits to groups, care homes and nursing homes, attending events and parades, working with faith groups as well as crime prevention advice and support for residents. One of the most rewarding aspects for me is people or groups within the community requesting us to visit them; it means they have trust and confidence in what we do in the community, it’s always a welcome respite for us from some of the incidents we attend, but also opens up communication channels with the community that may not otherwise be there.

I supervise officers across 5 ward areas; Normanton, Littleover and Blagreaves, Mickleover, Abbey and Sunny Hill. Each area is completely different and so our policing and engagement approach to them is tailored to the communities needs and types of crime. I always say to the community that we can only work on what we know; if something is concerning you we would like to know, that way we can work to resolve any problems. A lot of our work is lead by community information and intelligence, it also contributes to our 3 monthly priorities, so nothing is ‘a waste of time’ for the Safer Neighbourhood Team to know.
